What to Do If Your Home Can't Handle Induction Power?
Does Your Circuit Breaker Trip After Installing an Induction Cooktop?
High-power induction cooktops require more electricity than standard outlets can provide. Especially built-in models with 2 or 3 burners can consume up to 3kW or more. This often exceeds the home's contracted electricity capacity. In such cases, an electric power upgrade is necessary.
1. Electrical Requirements for Induction Cooktops
- Voltage: 220V
- Current: At least 15A (usually 20–30A)
- Dedicated Circuit: Required (no sharing with other appliances)
- Breaker: Circuit breaker and separate wiring are essential
2. How to Check Your Home's Electrical Capacity
Visit Kepco Cyber Branch, log in, and check the “Contract Type and Capacity” section. Most homes have a default contract of 3kW (15A) or 4kW (20A). To run an induction cooktop smoothly, you need at least 5kW.
3. How to Request a Power Upgrade
Call Kepco Customer Center (123 without area code) or request online at the Cyber Branch under Capacity Upgrade.
- Required Documents: Applicant’s ID, application form
- Installer: Must use a licensed electrician
- Processing Time: Typically 3–5 business days
- Cost: Varies by upgrade (5kW → 7kW = approx. ₩100,000–300,000)
4. Post-Upgrade Checklist
- Outlet: Replace regular 16A → 20A dedicated outlet
- Wiring Thickness: Use 2.5㎟ or thicker cables
- Circuit Breaker: Install at least a 30A breaker
After installation, make sure to verify breaker capacity and check for leakage, and confirm that your induction cooktop is on its own circuit.
5. Is There a Way to Use Induction Without Upgrading?
If an upgrade isn’t feasible, consider using a single-burner portable induction cooktop or a hybrid induction + highlight model. However, for optimal performance and speed, built-in induction models are best, so long-term, an upgrade is often more economical and reliable.
Summary: Power Upgrade is Key to Induction Success!
Induction cooktops are fast and safe but need sufficient electrical capacity. Review your contracted power, breaker, and outlet setup. If necessary, contact Kepco and work with a certified electrician to upgrade your power. With proper setup, your induction cooktop will run smoothly and safely.
